The car

Perhaps a somewhat overshadowed car, and not that well know. The BMW V12 LMR is the successor of the 1998 BMW V12 LM, a car designed in collaboration with the Williams F1 team. The following year, the V12 LMR was introduced, and won the infamous 1999 24 Houres of Le Mans, the year the Mercedes CLR had its horrific accidents at Mulsanne where the car flipped into the air. After Mercedes Withdrew its cars due to unsafety, it was a battle between Toyota and BMW. While Toyota continued to face many crashes and unreliability issues, the #17 BMW had quite a marginal lead, until it crashed in the final hours, with an injured J.J. Lehto. Now the #15 car led the race, closely followed by the #3 Toyota GT-One. But bad luck struck again for the Japanese team, as in the closing stages, the Toyota’s rear tire exploded on Mulsanne straight, having to limp back and coming across the line in second place. A year full of disasters and unreliability, it shows that to finish first, you first have to finish.
The BMW V12 LMR is powered by a V12 (duh), that was previously found in e.g. the McLaren F1. The engineers used clever loop holes in the LMGTP rulebook to create an off-centre cockpit layout to improve rear aerodynamics, a layout Audi would later adapt in a very succesfull manner. The LMR is also extremely low, with the rollbar barely reaching 1 metre of height.

The model

Capturing an open cockpit car with an off-centre seating position was quite unique, and this is my first, but definetely not my last open-cockpit design. I had to come up with how to detail the sides, as I had plenty of room on one side, but just 1 plate of depth on the other side due to the chassis. SNOT techniques are used throughout the entire model, and give the BMW it’s sleek looks. I am very happy that I was able to capture the German flags on the top sides, giving the model something brickbuilt as well. Another fine detail is the use of a hinge plate to support the lower rear wing, making it as thin as possible, and adding some greebling between the binocular-exhaust pipes. The side mirrors are carried over from my Peugeot 908 model, and use the barraki eye pieces in black. In theory you can make the #17 sister car as well with red mirrors, but there is no altenate stickersheet for it though.

Partslist does NOT include parts for a minifgure, all parts in blue/dark blue are not visible and can be ordered in any colour
