The car

The Porsche 911 GT1 98 is the third iteration of the 911 GT1, following the 1996 and 1997 EVO model. The GT1 ’98 was a more radical prototype, that bared the absolute minimum resemblance to the roadgoing 911 996 model, being just the head- and taillights. Only 1 roadgoing 911 GT1 was produced, as that was required by the FIA GT1 regulations. The 911 GT1 98 also celebrated 50 years of Porsche history in its time, and now, 25 years later the 75th anniversary is being held. 25 years ago the Porsche 911 GT1 scored a 1-2 at the 24 hours of Le Mans, fighting against the much faster Mercedes-Benz CLK LM and Toyota GT-ONE. The 911 proved to be more reliable, and with some smart strategic calls, the 911 GT1 finished in first and second place, securing Porsche’s 16th overall victory.
The car was revolutionary for its time, as it was the first Porsche to be designed around a fully carbonfibre monoqoque, and being developed completely digital using CAD software. The original design of the 911 GT1 came from the legendary designer Norbert Singer, and powered with a Flat 6 twin turbo, good for 550 hp, the car was quite fast, but not as fast as the competition.

The model

This is my 75th car model, and to celebrate that, I wanted to design something special. To conclude my GT1 series I decided to build one of my favourite cars from the 90s, the 911 GT1 98. It was quite a tricky car to design. The middle and rear of the car came together quite quickly, but the front took me a lot longer to get right. 26 iterations passed the design process, with some more tweaks along the way too. In the end I used the more recent curved wedges at an angle, capturing the gradual curvature of the nose, sloping downwards as much as possible. The car is quite sturdy too, only the rear wing can be a bit fragile, as it is only secured with 2 studs. This time the steering wheel is turned upside down, this era of cars featured more of a chopped off round steering wheel, compared to the more modern squarish race steering wheels.

Stickers
The Porsche 911 GT1 98 has the most complex and intricate sticker sheet of all my models, and with 53 stickers it is also one of the largerst ones too. Capturing all the details took some time as well, and here too many revisions occured to capture the detailed Mobil1 livery. I tried many options for the headlights, and eventually chose to make them with stickers, as I deemed every other option to be far less accurate. They would either stick out too much, were too squared or simple, or simply lacked detail. Stickers are  available via Brickstickershop HERE.
