“I’ve not built this set yet but after staring at photos for months I feel like I had enough ideas to get cracking, so here are my modifications to The Mandalorian’s ship the Razor Crest. As usual I’ve avoided messing around with the structure and limited myself to altering the surface layer only where possible. Here’s a run down of my changes:

  • Improved the look of the rear landing gear ‘pods’ and made all three gear foldable
  • Rebuilt the ‘nose’ section so it looks narrower
  • Moved the front weapons up by one stud
  • Tinkered with the front and back of the engines to give the big tubes a bit more of a tapered shape
  • Filled some ugly gaps and swapped a few dark grey pieces for light grey
  • Gave Din a bit more to look at in the cockpit

Hopefully you can see some subtle improvement to the look of the ship! There are plenty of great modifications out there and most have tackled then nose and engines, so I also focussed on these to give the set a bit more screen accuracy.

Without rebuilding too much of the engines’ middles I tried to add a bit more of bulk, length at the back and slimmed down the intakes. The intakes are probably the most expensive part of the whole mod as those 3×3 rounded bricks are still rare and costly, hopefully they’ll come down in price soon but if you want to cut the cost of parts by 1/4 they can easily be left out.

I’ve tried to make the landing gear foldable, the front skid is still fairly visible when tucked way but the rear ones disappear almost completely. Unfortunately their being hidden means the side panels no longer open fully, but stop slightly before appearing ‘flat’. It should still be easy to get your hands into the ship but won’t be as straightforward to play with. Let’s be honest though, we’re all too old to play with Lego here :Below, from left to right, are the original set, the modifications (both new and moved pieces) and the final modification.

I’ve uploaded the Studio model of the modified build, this includes the extra pieces shown in groups (have a look below) just in case you want to take a portion of the mod rather than the whole thing. I hope it proves useful for some of you, thanks for looking!

Update Nov ’20: Thank you to @Reinstabursche on Instagram for taking the time to help me find a couple of mistakes in the istructions and parts list, sorry if you’ve come across those but you clever beans can work around my incompetence, right? 😉 All fixed now though.

Update Dec ’20: More thanks to themoosefigs2.0 on Instagram for pointing out a collision between the modified nose and the Technic connectors from step 59 in the original instructions, much appreciated! The workaround is to remove these connectors and just use 1×2 plates to hold the Technic liftarms together. Rebrickable also likes to remove the dark blueish grey 1×2/1×4 brackets from the inventory, be sure to have 4 of them in your Wanted Lists before making any orders.”   – By the author
