“In 1966, Marcello Gandini (Bertone) had still served the traditional design codes of the 1960s with the unearthly beautiful Miura (https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-50368/PierreBrunsvig/lamborghini-miura/#details). Despite its modern mid-engine layout, the first supercar featured a stretched front end, harmonious proportions and elegant, curved lines. Just five years later, Gandini set out to revolutionise modern sports car design at the Geneva Motor Show.

The yellow Lamborghini Countach LP 500 design study looked like a glimpse of the distant future. The designer had created the perfect formal implementation of the mid-engine concept, this was the prototype of future supercars: a geometric design language with aggressive, sharply cut lines and radically forward-oriented proportions.

In 1967, the big competitor Ferrari had presented its first mid-engine road sports car: the Dino 206 GT with a six-cylinder engine. Ferrari presented its first twelve-cylinder mid-engine in 1971: the successor to the Ferrari Daytona, the 365 GT4 BB. All of them were beautiful Pininfarina creations, but formally they continued in the tradition of the 1960s and were not intended to found a new design era.
Of course, there had already been some pioneering one-box designs before: The Bizzarrini Manta (Italdesign/Giorgio Giugiaro 1968), Alfa Romeo Carabo (Bertone/Marcello Gandini 1968), Lancia Stratos Zero (Bertone/Marcello Gandini 1970), Ferrari Modulo (Pininfarina/Paolo Martin 1970) are the most important examples.

But only Ferruccio Lamborghini had the guts to develop such a radical study as the Countach into a production car. In 1972 he made the decision, and in 1973 he presented the green Countach prototype LP400 at the Geneva Motor Show – just in time for the oil crisis! Development then continued until 1974, when the first production cars could be delivered. The success story of the Countach began, and Lamborghini continued to build the original LP 400 version until 1978.
